Doctors Without Borders Reveals Horrifying Details Of US Bombing
Doctors Without Borders is, without question, one of the most respected non-profit organizations in the world.
Founded in 1971, the organization brings help to those who need it most around the globe, anywhere, at any time.
The worldwide respect and admiration for the group made the October 5 bombing on a hospital run by the organization even more deplorable.
In October, the US, which still has a significant military presence in Afghanistan, aided Afghan troops with airstrikes in Kunduz, Afghanistan.
In the process, the US also bombed a hospital operated by Doctors Without Borders, killing at least 30 people in the process, CNN reported.
On Thursday, the prestigious organization blasted the US for its egregious crimes.
The organization said in a statement,
The chronological review of the events leading up to, during, and immediately following the airstrikes reveal no reason why the hospital should have come under attack. There were no armed combatants or fighting within or from the hospital grounds.
The report acknowledged the team of medical experts was, indeed, helping combatants from both sides of the fight, but the hospital was not being used for military purposes.
Beyond basic information, the report also pointed out some of the more horrific details of that day, including facts likepatients burning in their beds and that “medical staff were decapitated and lost limbs.”
The report also revealed some of the staff members were shot at as they attempted to flee the building:
Many staff describe seeing people being shot, most likely from the plane, as people tried to flee the main hospital building that was being hit with each airstrike. Some accounts mention shooting that appears to follow the movement of people on the run. [Doctors Without Borders] doctors and other medical staff were shot while running to reach safety in a different part of the compound.
The US government has apologized for the incident, the Huffington Post reported, calling it a “mistake.”
However, Doctors Without Borders wants the incident classified as a war crime and independently investigated.
